Teen Angels’ Project Continues Mission of Unique Nonprofit

Teen Angels has been a service project of our Rotary Club for four years, continuing a unique mission to assist high school and middle school students.

In late 2009, Renee Hembree organized a holiday shopping trip to help homeless students at North Myrtle Beach High School. The nonprofit she founded provided prom attire, from a closet of donated dresses;
nonperishable food from a pantry at the school; backpacks and school supplies.

Other financial help, such as paying utility bills and temporary shelter, was provided as needs arose. North Myrtle Beach Middle School was added several years ago.

Renee has many success stories of young people helped by Teen Angels who have stayed in touch through college and beyond. From the beginning, Renee relied on contributions from groups and individuals such as Barefoot Ladies Luncheon.

Eventually, Renee asked the Rotary Club of Little River to be the steward for Teen Angels. The board established the Teen Angels Committee which received funds from the disbanded nonprofit and continued assistance, typically, through gift cards, as students and families were referred by school guidance counselors and others.

Scholarships represent 25% of funds spent last year and are presented to NMBHS and NMB Christian School seniors. Clothing and gifts represent 20% of expenses, food/meals 18% and school supplies/programs 17%.
