On May 1st, 2021, I had 43 volunteers meet at 46th Avenue South to clean the beach area as well as the sand dunes. This was the first time we have been able to do a beach cleanup in over a year. I provided coffee, water, and donuts to all the volunteers. Bags, gloves, pickers and large plastic bags were also provided to each person. Several filled their bags and had to dump them before finishing. Most made it back to our table location and we took written inventories of items found. Then everything was recycled that could be and the rest was tossed. Our findings went to an organization called MyCoast. They keep track of the inventories we report back to them.
We had grandparents with grandchildren, single ladies, single men, couples, and High School students from North Myrtle Beach High School. Some things found were beer bottles, beer cans, plastic grocery bags, cigarette butts, plastic water bottles, a pair of shoes, beach toys, 2 boomerangs, and just paper in general.
I'd like to extend a sincere thank you to all who showed up to participate in this worthwhile project. I even got three interested people for next falls *clean-up*. It was nice to see many returning faces as well as new ones. Thank you again and hope to see you in the fall.
